Hesco Plates: The Complete Lineup and How to Choose

Part of our complete guide How to Choose the Right Body Armor

Hesco plates are among the most respected hard armor plates on the market: American-made, NIJ certified where it counts, and offered in one of the deepest lineups in the industry. That depth is also what makes Hesco confusing to shop. The model numbers (3612, L210, 4601, M210) do not tell you much at a glance, and the lineup spans everything from a 2.5 lb floating Level III plate to full Level IV armor-piercing protection. This guide maps the entire range so you can find the right plate fast.

For the broader threat-level framework, see our complete body armor guide. Every plate below links to its product page, where you will find the full threat matrix, exact specs, and live stock. Weights cited are for the common SAPI Medium cut and vary by size.

The Four Tiers of Hesco Plates

The Hesco lineup breaks into four practical groups. Match the tier to your real threat profile first, then pick the specific plate by weight and budget.

  • Level III stops common lead-core rifle rounds (5.56 M193, 7.62×51 M80, 7.62×39), but not 5.56 green tip M855 and not armor piercing.
  • Level III+ adds 5.56 green tip M855 coverage, the gap many standard Level III plates miss. Certified, stand-alone.
  • Special Threat is tested against a defined list of rounds rather than carrying an NIJ level rating. This tier holds the lightest plates and the AK-focused options, several covering 7.62×39 API.
  • Level IV stops armor-piercing rounds up to .30-06 M2 AP, the highest certified protection. Ceramic, heavier, the choice when AP is a credible threat.

Hesco Level III Plates

The Hesco 3802C is the lightest certified hard plate Hesco makes, just 2.5 lb and 0.95″ thick, and it is waterproof and buoyant, which makes it a natural fit for maritime use. It stops common lead-core rifle rounds but not green tip. For the same Level III protection even lighter, the Hesco 3802LV drops to 2.3 lb and 0.55″ thick, but it is an in-conjunction-with plate that reaches its rating only when worn over IIIA soft armor.

Choose Level III when your threat is common rifle fire, you want the lightest possible plate, and you do not need green tip or AP coverage.

Hesco Level III+ Plates

Level III+ is where most buyers land, because it adds the 5.56 green tip M855 coverage that standard Level III misses. The Hesco 3612 is the sweet spot: certified III+, light at 4.0 lb and a true 1.00″ thick, stopping the common threats including green tip. The Hesco 3612C is its near twin with a rugged polyurea (LineX) finish for hard use, at 4.1 lb.

If you want more coverage, two plates go further. The Hesco 3810 (4.1 lb, 0.98″) adds 7.62x54R LPS and 7.62×63 (.30-06) soft point, calibers many III+ plates do not address. The Hesco 3411MC is the most capable certified III+ Hesco makes, covering even 7.62×39 API armor piercing, at the cost of more weight (5.7 lb) and at a value price.

Hesco Special Threat Plates

Special threat plates are tested against a defined list of rounds rather than carrying an NIJ level rating. This tier is where Hesco puts its lightest plates and its AK specialists, and for many civilian and LEO buyers it is the practical sweet spot: real rifle protection at the lowest weight.

For the lightest possible plate, the Hesco Z210 is the lightest stand-alone rifle plate Hesco makes at roughly 3.4 lb and 0.62″ thick, covering lead and mild steel core threats but not AP. The Hesco L211 (4.9 lb, 0.69″) is a strong value covering the common threats, and the Hesco L210 (5.5 lb, single curve, 0.59″) is a proven special threat option.

If your primary concern is the AK platform, two plates are built for it and cover the full 7.62×39 range including API. The Hesco U210 is the light option (4.2 lb, 0.56″, Spectra polyethylene), and the Hesco M210 (5.2 lb) delivers the same AK coverage for less. The Hesco D220 (5.9 lb) is tested to the DEA ballistic protocol.

Hesco Level IV Plates

Level IV stops armor-piercing rounds up to .30-06 M2 AP, the highest certified protection. Hesco gives you a clear weight-versus-price ladder. The Hesco 4403MC is the most affordable route into certified Level IV, at 7.9 lb and a thin 0.83″. The Hesco 4601 is the mid-tier choice, certified and over a pound lighter at 6.6 lb. The Hesco 4800 is the lightest Level IV Hesco makes at about 5.1 lb (NIJ .06 compliant), lighter than many special threat plates, at a premium price.

The pattern across Level IV: pay less and carry more weight (4403MC), pay mid and save weight (4601), or pay a premium for the lightest AP protection on the board (4800).

Side Plates

Side plates protect the area under the arms that front and back plates miss. The Hesco L110 is the light, affordable special threat option (1.7 lb in 6×6, floats). The Hesco 3110 is the Level III+ match for III+ torso plates, and the Hesco 4101 is the Level IV side plate for full AP protection on your flanks. Match your side plates to your torso plate level.

Hesco Plates FAQ

Are Hesco plates good?

Yes. Hesco is a respected American hard armor manufacturer used in military, law enforcement, and serious civilian applications. The plates use quality ceramic and Spectra composite construction, the lineup is NIJ certified where rated, and it spans the full range from ultralight Level III to certified Level IV.

What is the difference between Hesco special threat and Level IV plates?

Special threat plates (like the L210, U210, Z210) are tested against a defined list of common rounds at lighter weight, and several stop 7.62×39 API, but not .30-06 M2 AP. Level IV plates (4403MC, 4601, 4800) are certified to stop .30-06 M2 AP, at greater weight and cost. Special threat suits most domestic threats; Level IV is for credible armor-piercing threats.

What is the lightest Hesco plate?

The Hesco Z210 is the lightest stand-alone rifle plate at roughly 3.4 lb in SAPI Medium. The 3802C is the lightest certified Level III at 2.5 lb. The 4800 is the lightest Level IV at about 5.1 lb, lighter than many special threat plates.

Which Hesco plate is best for an AK / 7.62×39?

The Hesco M210 and U210 are built specifically for the AK platform and cover the full 7.62×39 range including API armor piercing. The U210 is the lighter option (4.2 lb); the M210 (5.2 lb) delivers the same coverage for less.

What does Level III+ mean on a Hesco plate?

Level III+ means the plate is certified Level III plus tested against additional special threats, most importantly 5.56 M855 green tip, which some standard Level III plates do not reliably stop. It is the intermediate tier between Level III and Level IV and does not stop .30-06 armor piercing.

Which Hesco plate should I buy?

For green tip coverage at low weight, the certified 3612 (Level III+). For the lightest plate, the Z210 special threat. For the AK, the U210 or M210. For armor-piercing protection, the 4403MC (affordable), 4601 (mid-tier), or 4800 (lightest). Match the plate to your realistic threat rather than buying the highest level by default.

Bottom Line

Hesco covers four tiers: Level III for common rifle threats at the lowest weight, Level III+ for certified green tip coverage, special threat for the lightest plates and AK specialists, and Level IV for armor-piercing protection. Match the tier to your real threats, then pick by weight and budget. For most civilian buyers, a III+ plate like the 3612 or a special threat plate like the L211 hits the sweet spot.
