Severe bleeding does not only happen on a battlefield. It happens in car crashes, on farm equipment, in the shop, at the range and after a tornado. A person with a major bleed can die in the minutes before an ambulance arrives, which means the one who saves them is whoever is standing there. The North American Rescue Individual Bleeding Control Kit is built to make sure that person has the tools.
Everything in the kit follows the order you would work in. The gloves go on first, two pairs of large nitrile so a helper can glove up too. The trauma shears cut clothing away so you can see the wound. For an arm or a leg there is a genuine C-A-T tourniquet, the Official Tourniquet of the U.S. Army. For a wound you have to pack there are two packs of NAR Wound Packing Gauze and a 6 inch Flat Responder Emergency Trauma Dressing goes over the top to hold pressure. The permanent marker is for writing the time on the tourniquet and the 56 by 96 inch survival blanket keeps the casualty warm, which matters because a person who has lost blood loses heat fast.
You do not need to be a medic to use it. A Just in Time instruction card with step-by-step pictures is packed inside, so someone with no training can follow along under stress. NAR designed this kit to let the general public act as immediate responders.
The whole kit is vacuum sealed in a ruggedized pouch 7 by 5 by 2.5 inches and 15 oz. Sealed flat it fits a glove box, a range bag, a desk drawer, a backpack or the trunk. It stays clean and complete until the day you tear it open.
This is the Basic configuration, covering the tourniquet, wound packing and a pressure dressing. If you want to build on it add HyFin Vent chest seals for penetrating chest wounds and QuikClot Combat Gauze LE for a hemostatic. A Stop the Bleed class is short and it makes every item in this kit faster in your hands.
