A penetrating wound to the chest does more than bleed. Every breath can pull air in through the hole and into the chest cavity where it collapses the lung. If that air keeps building with no way out it becomes a tension pneumothorax, one of the leading preventable causes of death in combat trauma. The fix in the field is to seal the wound and the HyFin Vent Compact Chest Seal from North American Rescue is built to do exactly that.
Each seal has three vented channels designed to let air escape the chest cavity when the casualty breathes out and to keep air from being pulled back in through the wound when they breathe in. You get two seals in the pack because a round that goes in often comes out, so one package lets you treat an entry and an exit wound or two separate penetrating wounds.
A chest seal only works if it stays stuck and a casualty is rarely clean or dry. The HyFin uses an advanced hydrogel adhesive designed to hold on skin covered in blood, sweat, body hair or dirt. The large red tab makes application a single peel and apply step and gives you a handle to lift an edge and burp the wound if pressure builds.
The Compact packaging is about 25% smaller than the standard HyFin Vent Chest Seal, so it lies flat in a low profile IFAK, a go-bag, a cargo pocket or your body armor without being folded. The rugged foil pouch tears open at the Red-Tip tear notches and the twin packaging is perforated so you can open one seal and keep the other sealed until you need it.
