Packing or covering a wound is only half the job. Something has to hold hard pressure on it while your hands move to the next problem and it has to go on right the first time under stress. That is what a pressure dressing is for. North American Rescue engineered the Emergency Trauma Dressing series using data from more than 63 After Action Reviews of real-world battle dressing applications, so it is built around how these actually get put on.
The ETD is a resilient elastic wrap with a sterile non-adherent pad attached. The pad goes on the wound and the wrap builds pressure over it, all in one piece. Quick-Grip Roll Control tabs keep the bandage from unrolling and getting away from you while you wrap. There are no pressure bars or hooks to work, which keeps the application to simple motions that are easy to remember under stress. When you reach the end a durable securing device locks it down.
It is a multi-functional bandage too. The same elastic wrap can sling and swath an arm, secure a splint to a limb or do any other job that calls for an elastic wrap.
It comes in two sizes and both bandages are 56 inches long. The 4 inch weighs 2.6 oz in a pack 4.5 by 2.5 by 1.75 inches, small enough for the most compact IFAK. The 6 inch gives you a wider pad and wrap for larger wounds at 4 oz in a pack 6 by 2.5 by 2.1 inches. Both are vacuum sealed in low-cube packaging with NAR’s red Red-Tip tear notches so you can find where to open it fast.
Use it over NAR Wound Packing Gauze or QuikClot Combat Gauze LE to hold pressure on a packed wound. A pressure dressing that is too tight on a limb can cause its own problems, so learn to apply it and check it in a Stop the Bleed or TCCC course.
